Live Project

Revamping an existing fintech application is a complex and high-stakes process, especially when you are tasked with working as a solo designer. The Finpay Money Revamp is a testament to my ability to independently drive significant design and functional improvements while navigating the unique challenges of fintech, including adherence to financial regulations and creating intuitive user experiences.

As a fintech product, Finpay Money serves a diverse user base with a variety of financial needs. However, the previous version of the application faced usability challenges, lacked modern features, and struggled to meet user expectations for convenience and security. Through this revamp, I aimed to modernize the design, enhance functionality, and align the product with current regulatory requirements and industry standards.

My Role

As the solo designer, I took on multiple responsibilities throughout the project:

  • Conducted user research to understand pain points and user expectations.

  • Redesigned the application interface to improve usability and align with modern UI/UX trends.

  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams (developers, product managers, and compliance officers) to ensure the design adhered to both user needs and regulatory standards.

  • Managed the entire design process, from wireframes and prototypes to the final handoff to developers.

  • Ensured the application’s scalability to accommodate future feature additions.

Challenges

  • Balancing Regulations with Usability, financial applications must comply with strict regulatory standards, which often limit design flexibility.

  • Integrating multiple features without overwhelming users.

  • Being a solo designer meant managing the entire design lifecycle independently.

Solutions

  • Collaborated with compliance teams to fully understand regulations and designed workflows that satisfied both legal requirements and user needs. Simplified complex processes (e.g., KYC) with clear instructions and a user-friendly interface.

  • Designed a modular UI system that grouped related features intuitively. For example, all wallet-related functionalities (top-up, balance display, transactions) were consolidated into a single, easy-to-navigate section.

  • Adopted an agile workflow, starting with low-fidelity wireframes to quickly validate ideas, followed by high-fidelity prototypes for detailed feedback from stakeholders.

Design Process

  1. Research & Analysis

    • Talked to existing users to understand pain points (like KYC being too complicated, features scattered, unclear navigation).

    • Worked closely with compliance to map out OJK & BI regulations, making sure whatever we designed would stay legal.

    • Did a competitive scan (OVO, DANA, GoPay, etc.) to see what “good” looks like in onboarding, transactions, and QRIS.

  1. Ideation & Wireframing

    • Re-mapped the user flow for KYC with clearer steps and progress indicators.

    • Designed a modular UI system where all wallet functions (top-up, balance, transactions) live together.

  1. Visual Design

    • Built design system for improve consistency

    • Ran design reviews regularly with devs, PMs, and compliance to keep everyone aligned.

  1. Testing & Iteration

    • Developed interactive prototypes to test key functionalities

    • Conducted usability tests with a diverse group of users.

    • Iterated on feedback to refine workflows and address user concerns.

Key Features Developed

introduced several new features that greatly enhanced the platform’s functionality:

  1. Bill Payment, Simplified payment processes for BPJS, Telkom, insurance, prepaid and postpaid mobile plans, electricity (PLN), and more.dards.

  1. QR Payment (QRIS), Implemented features for QRIS payments, including: QRIS Pay, QRIS Setor Tunai, QRIS Tarik Tunai.

  1. Remittance, enabled secure and efficient domestic fund transfers.

  1. KYC (Know Your Customer)
Integrated an easy-to-use KYC process for compliance with financial regulations.

  1. Linkage Account, Digital Wallet Management, Cashout Withdrawal, etc.

Results & Impact

The Finpay Money Revamp resulted in significant improvements in both functionality and user satisfaction:

  • Enhanced User Experience: Simplified navigation and modernized interfaces led to a 30% increase in positive user feedback.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Optimized KYC process enhanced approval rates while maintaining regulatory compliance and ensuring smooth onboarding.

Key Takeaways

Working as a solo designer on a fintech revamp project requires a deep understanding of user needs, regulatory requirements, and technical feasibility.

  • Effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams are critical to balancing design, functionality, and compliance.

  • A user-centered design approach, combined with agile workflows, can result in impactful solutions even with limited resources.
